At Candles in the Dark, we believe that education is one of the most powerful ways to prevent infant loss, support grieving families, and honor the lives of the little ones we have lost. Whether you are a parent, sibling, friend, or community member-this page is here to help you understand and take action.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) is the unexplained death of a seemingly healthy baby, usually during sleep, and most often under 1 year old. It is something no one expects-and when it happens, families are left with overwhelming pain and questions.
SIDS is not caused by vaccines, choking,or illness. It is not anyone's fault. But through awarness and education,we can lower the risk-and help families feel more empowered and less alone.
Common Risk Factors and Mistakes
Many loving parents make choices that seem safe-but can unknowingly increase the risk of infant loss during sleep. Some of the common risk factors include:
Placing babies to sleep on their stomachs instead of on their backs
Co-sleeping especially in unsafe sleep environments
Loose blankets, stuffed animals, or pillows in the crib
Overheating or using too many layers
Smoking during pregnancy or around the baby
We share this not to blame-but to inform. So many families have never been told what safe sleep really looks like.
The safest way for a baby to sleep is:
Alone-in their own crib or bassinet
Back-always place baby on their own back to sleep
Crib-free on blankets, toys, or pillows
